Pattern
a retrospektive of a pattern live drawing workshop in May 2026
I wanted to make a pattern to experiment with. I drew a flower, I made some marks, drew more flowers, used all the colours. I thought about creating a landscape by complimenting the pattern with some plain colour papers. I wanted to be brave. I cut the pattern, regretted it almost immediately. Added pieces of plain blue and black paper. I couldn’t see the landscape I was waiting for. I waited longer.
After a view days of waiting the pattern gave me a chance. I added a tree, a house, a flower, a little human. I added more little houses and humans and trees, everything for a nice place to be. The more I added, the more I wanted to add.
The blue and black paper made sense now.
I recognised some of the little humans from the neighbourhood. The long blue hair boy is often at the playground. There is a secret leaves green nature world around the playground, where only little humans can pass through. Ballet classes are now three times a weeks, because of the upcoming show. Some dancers would rather jump with their friends over walls… sometimes they do. The little humans had some stories to tell.
It is truly unpredictable where a piece of paper can take you.

Love * Juliana

This is so lovely, Juliana! You were right- the pattern came together beautifully. I really love the people and how they found a home in your field of flowers!
these are lovely, and the little house with the negative-space figure is really powerful.
